Six things to check on a supplement label before you buy it

Six checks, in the order they matter.
Every dose printed, no proprietary blend
A proprietary blend is a legal way of listing ingredients without saying how much of each is in there. It is almost always used to hide that the impressive-sounding ones are present in trace amounts. If you cannot see the milligrams, you cannot compare the product to the research it cites, and nothing further on this list matters.
Read the panel. Every active should carry its own number, not sit inside a blend total.
Someone other than the manufacturer checked
Third-party testing means an independent lab verified that the contents match the label and that contaminants are within limits. What matters is whether a brand names the standard it is tested against and the facility it is made in. A brand that does neither, and instead talks about how much it cares about quality, is telling you which of the two it has.
Look for a named testing standard on the site, not the words “rigorously tested” with nothing behind them.
The form matters more than the milligrams
A dose on a label is what went into the capsule, not what reaches your bloodstream. Compound form decides the difference: active folate rather than folic acid, magnesium glycinate rather than oxide, and an absorption aid where the molecule needs one. A large dose of a poorly absorbed form is an expensive way to make urine.
Look for the form named in brackets after each ingredient. Vague naming is usually the cheap form.
No fillers, no unnecessary excipients
Excipients are the non-active ingredients that make manufacturing easier - bulking agents, flow agents, anti-caking agents, colours. Some are genuinely needed. Many exist because they let a manufacturer put less active material in a bigger capsule. Every line on the ingredient list that isn’t doing a job is a line you are paying for.
Read past the actives to the bottom of the list. That is where the padding lives.
Named experts, and a board that can say no
Most supplement brands are marketing companies that commissioned a white-label formula. The question is whether anyone with relevant expertise was in the room, whether they are named, and whether they had authority to reject something. A review board that cannot say no is decoration.
Are the advisors named with checkable credentials, or is it an unattributed "team of experts"?
Testing the product, not just citing papers
Almost every brand cites published research on individual ingredients. Very few test the thing they actually sell.
