In elite sport, nobody is chasing the big win any more

Dr James Morehen works with international rugby squads and world championship boxers. He explains where marginal gains actually come from when the training is already maximal, and why the last one is the hardest to buy.

“At this level nobody wins by training harder. They win by recovering faster than the person opposite them.”

The session is the stimulus. The adaptation happens afterwards, and that is where the margin lives.

01 · The ceiling

When everyone trains at the limit, training stops being the variable.

A professional squad has already spent the obvious gains. The programming is periodised, the sleep is monitored, the nutrition is weighed, and the strength numbers are close to what the body can hold in-season. Two teams meeting on a Saturday have done broadly the same work.

What separates them is who arrives able to express it. Rugby is a collision sport played weekly for nine months; a boxer in camp trains twice a day for twelve weeks while cutting weight. In both cases the constraint is not how hard you can train. It’s how much of that training you can absorb before the next session is on top of you.

That’s why the search moved from load to recovery, and from recovery to the cellular machinery underneath it.

Spent already

Training load

Periodised to the week. There is no more headroom without breaking something.

Spent already

Sleep and fuelling

Tracked, protected, weighed. The gains here were banked years ago.

Still open

Cellular capacity

The energy available to convert the session into an adaptation. Nobody optimises it because nothing reports on it.

02 · The mechanism

Recovery is a job the cell has to fund.

Adaptation is not passive. Repairing muscle damage, clearing metabolic waste and rebuilding glycogen are all active processes, and every one of them costs energy. Mitochondria produce that energy using NAD⁺, and repair enzymes need the same coenzyme to work at all.

Two systems draw on one pool, and they run hardest overnight: energy production, which is non-negotiable, and repair, which the body can defer. When supply is short, energy wins. The repair simply doesn’t get funded that night, and the athlete arrives at the next session carrying it.

Hard training raises the bill. NAD⁺ falls with age. In a thirty-something professional those two lines are moving in opposite directions, which is exactly when the recovery trend goes flat while nothing in the programme has changed.

Step 01

The session

Damage and depletion. The stimulus, not the adaptation.

Step 02

The repair bill

Rebuilding tissue and restoring fuel, all of it costed in energy.

Step 03

The budget

NAD⁺ funds both energy and repair, and it falls with age.

Step 04

The shortfall

Energy is paid first. Repair takes what is left, and you feel it on Tuesday.

Training harder raises the repair bill. It does nothing about the budget.

03 · The margin

A percent is not small when it compounds across a season.

Marginal gains get mocked because a single percent sounds trivial. In practice it isn’t a single percent, and it isn’t applied once. A rugby season is thirty-odd matches and several hundred sessions. A fight camp is twelve weeks of twice-daily work. Recovering marginally better after each one compounds into more quality sessions completed, fewer sessions missed, and a body that arrives at week ten still able to train.

That’s the honest way to describe what this kind of intervention does. It doesn’t make anyone stronger. It protects the athlete’s ability to keep doing the work that makes them stronger.

Where it shows first

04 · Why he worked with MUTO

Doses you can check, on a label you can read.

In professional sport a supplement has to clear two bars before anyone considers whether it works: every ingredient declared, and every dose stated. Proprietary blends don’t get through the door.

MUTO is built around three jobs - produce NAD⁺, protect it from being broken down as fast as it is made, and give the cell what it needs to spend it. Every dose is at the level used in the research it comes from, printed in full, and it’s made in a UK facility to GMP ISO standard with independent testing for purity and potency.

01 · Produce

The fuel your cells need

Raw material to make NAD⁺, plus the essentials to turn it into energy.

Nicotinamide riboside (NR) 300mg
Zinc 15mg
B1, B2, B3, B6, folate, B12 active forms
Copper 1mg
02 · Protect

Keeping your NAD⁺ working

The body breaks NAD⁺ down as fast as it makes it. Protecting it matters as much as producing it.

Quercetin 250mg
Grapeseed extract 200mg
Pterostilbene 100mg
Turmeric extract 200mg
03 · Put to work

Turning it into energy you feel

The final step: making sure that energy actually gets used.

Benefits

Feel it before you see it.

Then check it against your data.

What customers notice first, in the weeks before any trend line moves. Open any of them for the mechanism.

The same four weeks, read on your own device. Every claim here is one you can verify yourself. Open any of them for the mechanism.

01

Energy that doesn’t spike

All day, no crash

There are no stimulants in the formula, so there is nothing to come down from. What people describe is a flatter line rather than a lift - the afternoon dip going first, usually in weeks three to four.

02

Recover between sessions

Hard days cost less

The day after a hard session is where it shows. Repair is an energy-funded process, and funding it better means arriving at the next session with more of the last one absorbed.

03

Steadier mornings

Less fog on waking

Waking up is metabolically demanding. Most people notice mornings sharpening before anything appears on a wearable.

04

A calmer baseline

Fewer peaks and troughs

Less of the day spent braced. It is a subtle change and it is the one people describe last, usually after a month or more.

01

HRV

A validated recovery marker

Heart rate variability reflects how much repair work your body managed overnight. Read it as a trend across weeks, never as a single morning’s number.

02

Recovery score

Calculated overnight

Whatever your device calls it, it is a composite of HRV, resting heart rate and sleep. The useful signal is the weekly average moving, not one green morning.

03

Resting heart rate

Trend, not a single morning

Slower to move than HRV and harder to fake. A downward drift across a training block is the cleaner read of the two.

04

NAD⁺ levels

The system underneath

The input the rest of it depends on. Published research found a 51% rise against participants’ own baseline after 14 days of nicotinamide riboside.

The guarantee

90 days, or your money back

Ninety days is long enough for your own numbers to say something, which is why it is the window we stand behind. Log a 30-day HRV and resting heart rate average before your first capsule so the comparison is honest.

If the data hasn’t moved by day 90, tell us and we refund you. No return of the empty pouches, no argument about how you felt.

The questions athletes ask first.

Where does it fit in an existing programme?

It doesn’t replace fuelling, protein or sleep, and it isn’t a pre-workout. It works a layer beneath all of those, on the cell’s capacity to convert the session into an adaptation. Doses are printed in full, so overlap with what is already in the programme is visible rather than guessed at.

How soon would an athlete notice anything?

There are no stimulants in it, so nothing in the first hour. Most people report the afternoon dip going in weeks three to four, and wearable data typically moves between day 30 and day 60. Judge it on a trend across weeks, not on a single morning’s reading.

What if the data doesn’t move?

Then send it back. The 90-day money-back guarantee exists because the honest test is your own numbers over a training block, not how the marketing reads. Log a 30-day HRV and resting heart rate average before starting so the comparison means something.

Your 90-day MUTO journey

Weeks 1-2
Weeks 1-2 The quiet start

MUTO starts working from day one - beneath the surface, before your wearable has anything to show. This is the input building.

Weeks 3-4
Weeks 3-4 Felt, before it's measured

Steadier energy. Fewer crashes. A calmer baseline to train from. The system's compounding - you'll feel it first.

Month 2
Month 2 HRV starts to tell the story

HRV is the honest number - your nervous system reporting on your cells. This is where the system beneath starts to show.

Month 3
Month 3 The new baseline, measurable

By day 90, it's not just felt - it's on the screen. The standard you hold above starts to show in the system beneath.

What your wearable measures - and what it doesn't

HRV. Recovery. Readiness. Sleep quality. Every one of those scores is your cells doing energy work well or badly, converted into a number. MUTO supports how the billions of cells in your body produce that energy - the input behind the output.

Rigorous testing standards

Our products are tested by independent third-party laboratories for heavy metals, microbes, and purity. We have ongoing research collaborations with three research institutions.

How it fits your stack - and when it doesn't

  • Most NAD⁺ supplements give you a precursor and stop there. But making NAD⁺ is only the first of three jobs - skip the other two and you're paying to produce NAD⁺ your body loses or never turns into energy you feel.
  • Produce - NR gives your cells the building block they turn into NAD⁺. Essential, but on its own it's one third of the job. It's where NMN and NR stop - and where MUTO starts.
  • Protect - An enzyme (CD38) breaks NAD⁺ down almost as fast as you make it. Quercetin, Pterostilbene, Grapeseed and Turmeric slow that leak, so the NAD⁺ you produce actually sticks around.
  • Put to Work - NAD⁺ in your blood isn't energy yet. CoQ10 and BioPerine® help your cells absorb it and turn it into energy you feel - not just a better number on a lab report.
  • Produce without Protect is a leaking tank. Produce without Put to Work is fuel you never burn. NR and NMN do one job. MUTO does all three.

Clinically dosed, bio-available ingredients

Nicotinamide Riboside (NAD+ precursor), quercetin, grapeseed and turmeric extracts, pterostilbene and CoQ10 - with a complete B complex including methylated folate and B12, plus D3, K2, zinc, copper and BioPerine® for absorption.

How to take it

Take two capsules daily with your first meal. Most report a difference between weeks three and six. A daily system that builds a stronger baseline.
